Almaty city image

Almaty is situated in the center of the Eurasian continent on the southeast of the Republic of Kazakhstan in longitude 77 East and 43 latitude North on the bottom of Zailiisky Alatau – the most northern mountain area of Tyan Shan. The climate in the city is sharply continental, with large fluctuations in temperature, not only in the course of the year, but also during the day. In the southern residential areas, at an altitude of 1500-1700 meters above sea level in Medeo and Kamenskiy Plato you can feel the breath of glaciers. In 1854, on the banks of the Little Almatinka a military fortification was built, which was named Zailiysky and later Vernyi. In 1921, Vernyi was called Alma-Ata, which translates from Kazakh as the "Father of Apples". Since 1927 until 1998 Alma-Ata was the capital of Kazakhstan. In the early 90's the name of the city "Alma-Ata" was corrected according to the Kazakh language, i.e. to "Almaty" For nearly 70 years it helds the high status as main city of Kazakhstan.
